Upma

Upma

Upma is very popular breakfast meal in South Indian. It’s very light in taste and very easy to make. Upma is cooked from dry roasted semolina or coarse grounded rice. It can be feed to babies as well without veggies or with vegetable purines inside. It’s healthy and light for babies as well. I used to feed my daughter Upma and semolina pudding when she was one year old, and she loves it. From my recipe you can change veggies to vegetable purees and mild spices if you are making Upma for babies.

Ingredients:

  • Semolina 1 cup
  • Fine chopped veggies 1/2 cup(optional)
  • Crushed par boiled peas 1/2 tbsp
  • Oil or ghee 1 tbsp
  • Chopped onion 1 small
  • Salt to taste
  • Mustard seeds 1 tsp
  • Channa dal 1 tsp
  • Urad dal 1 tsp
  • Curry leaves 1 tsp
  • Black pepper 1/2 tsp(optional)
  • Lemon juice 1 tbsp
  • Roasted Peanuts or Cashews 1 tbsp(optional)
  • Water 3 cups

Instructions:

  • Dry roast Semolina in a pan on medium heat for approximate 5-7 minutes till you see semolina is fluffy in texture and you can smell fragrance of roasted Semolina.
  • 2)Switch off the flame and transfer semolina to a cool bowl.
  • In same pan heat oil and add mustard seeds, when it starts cracking add urad dal, Chana dal and roast it. When dal change color add curry leaves and chopped onion and sauté for 2 mins for onions to cook.
  • when onion gets soft, add chopped vegetables, peas, salt, pepper and mix well on low-medium heat and cover it with lid for 2 mins for vegetables to cook.
  • Add Semolina and mix well and slowly add 3 cups of water, mix and lets it boil and cover for next 1 min, so Semolina and vegetables sock little water. Now mix everything together and keep steering so semolina won’t stick at bottom. When everything come together, and leaves sides of the pan add 1/2 tsp ghee or oil and mix well.
  • Switch off the flame, Mix lemon juice and nuts.
  • Serve immediately with or without your favorite chutney.
