Thandai is Indian famous drink that is prepared with lots of dry fruit nuts and some spices. It is very good for immunity as it has very healthy ingredients in it. Traditionally it was prepared fresh, with fresh ingredients grounded on stone grinder with hands. When I was kid, I visited my aunt and she prepared thandai for us, at that time I thought it is so time consuming. But that’s worth it because of its benefits, it cool down and balance body temperature during hot sunny days. Now thandai is available in market in form of syrup. It contains lots of sugar in syrup, but that was easy method just pour in cups, mix with milk and drink.
Thandi is best for kids, who don’t like to drink milk, as it change milk flavor. I love chilled thandai. When I had my last visit in India, my father bring me thandai powder, that’s was from Gopal ji. I like that thandai so much and I don’t want that liquid thandai syrup anymore. After I came back, I couldn’t find Gopalji thandai powder here in our city. Then, I made my own thandai powder. Believe me, it is best that I tried to make thandai powder and it taste so good. Now thandai powder is easily available here in Canada as well but in home made thandai, we can control ingredients as per our liking(like some people don’t like pepper in thandai that can be skipped)
Thandai powder need not to add in cold milk always, some people cannot have cold drinks. Thandi powder can be added to boiled milk as well as it’s has healthy ingredients like dry fruits.
Today on vegflavors, I am sharing my own customized easily prepared thandai powder ready in less than 10 minutes.
Ingredients:
- Cashewnuts ½ cup
- Almonds ½ cup
- Fennel Seeds/ Saunf 3 tbsp
- Black pepper corns /Kali mirch 10 -12
- Melon Seeds 1 tbsp
- Pistachios ½ cup
- Poppy Seeds/ Khuskhas 1tbsp
- Green Cardomom 8-10
- Dry rose patels 2 tbps
- Saffron Strands/ Kesar 1 pinch
- Cinnamon Powder ½ tsp
- Nutmeg Powder/ Jaifal 1/3 tsp
- Sugar 1 cup
Method:
- Keep the dry fruits at hot dry place in a tray for 30-40 minutes so moisture from nuts can be eliminated.
- Or
- Heat a pan and shut of the flame and add dry fruits in it and toss for few seconds, take them out. It is instant method for moisture reduction from nuts, do not roast so oil will come out.
- Add all the ingredients in mixer grinder and grind all ingredients with dry fruits to make powder form.
- It will come out in little coarse form; I like it little coarse form of thandai.
- But if you feel, you can grind more and sift it from sieve.
- Thandai powder is ready to use. Store it in Airtight container.
To make Thandai from thandai podwer , add ½ tbps thandai powder to hot or cold milk and Blend properly. Instant thandai will get ready in 1 minute.
